Unfinished work carries evidence of how a decision was made. That evidence is valuable: it reveals alternate paths, awkward transitions, and the point where an idea first began to feel inevitable.

I try to give early work enough space to be strange before editing it into coherence. Sometimes the rough version has already found the essential thing.
